Daizukan'', or "''Super Mario Great Picture Book''") states of Choropoo: 「{{hover|土|つち}}の{{hover|中|なか}}でくらしている, {{hover|元気|げんき}}なモグラ。」 (''A peppy mole that lives under the ground.'')</ref> mole enemies who appear in several [[Mario (franchise)|''Mario'' games]], their first being ''[[Super Mario World]]''. They are moles who dart out of holes in the ground to either quickly pursue [[Mario]] or another character or to throw rocks at them and have been the most common mole enemies in the entire series. In  some games, Monty Moles appear in {{wp|Whac-A-Mole}}-themed [[minigame]]s. Despite Monty Moles being considered the main member of the species, their relatives, [[Rocky Wrench]]es from ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' (itself being described as a mole-like turtle at the time), appeared 2 years prior and may have been what Monty Moles might have been initially based on. However, starting in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'', Rocky Wrenches have since been redesigned to more heavily resemble Monty Moles (though Rocky Wrench's unused appearance in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' and their appearance in ''[[Mario Kart DS]]'' also have various design similarities to Monty Moles).

In ''Super Mario World'', Monty Moles are first encountered in the level [[Yoshi's Island 2]], though they also appear in [[Cookie Mountain]]. They pop out of random spots in the ground to surprise [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] and will either chase after him persistently or just walking around and hopping occasionally (though the latter behavior was not seen in future games). This game also features [[Mega Mole]]s, giant Monty Moles that Mario can actually ride on to get across obstacles, but can still be hit by one. Monty Moles can be defeated by any attack method.

 

In some [[List of Super Mario World beta elements|earlier builds]] of the game, Monty Moles had slightly different digging sprites from those in the final game.
