The Spike Bass is an enemy in New Super Mario Bros..
A Spike Bass is an enemy in New Super Mario Bros.. It resembles an oversized, dark red tadpole with a pale underbelly. Spike Bass also has beaming yellow eyes, sharp teeth and spikes all over its body.

Only appearing in World 2-A and World 3-C, a Spike Bass is a giant fish, brown in color with a pale underbelly. They also have beaming yellow eyes, sharp teeth and spikes all over their bodies. Spike Bass jumps from the water and tries to attack Mario. The fish can only reach a certain level though, if Mario is on high grounds, he will have a good chance of being safe. If Mario is to swim to complete the level, a Spike Bass will come to attack the plumber. Its habit is quite similar to Boss Bass, but a Spike Bass will not try to gulp Mario whole.
Spike Bass only appear in two levels, World 2-A and World 3-C. In it, a Spike Bass jumps out of the water to try and attack Mario or Luigi. This is similar to how Boss Basses behave except Spike Basses do not try to swallow Mario or Luigi. Spike Bass can only jump up to a certain height, and from a height, Mario or Luigi can likely avoid taking damage from them. If Mario is to swim to complete the level, a Spike Bass will come to attack him.

This enemy can be defeated with a Fireball, a Koopa Shell, a Starman or a Mega Mushroom. However, another Spike Bass will return after a few seconds to continue the pursuit. The boss Cheepskipper behaves similarly to a Spike Bass.

Spike Basses do not return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii or any later New Super Mario Bros. series installments. Their behavior of jumping out of the water was instead given to Porcupuffers.
