They are moles who dart out of holes in the ground to either quickly pursue [[Mario]] or another character or to throw rocks at them and have been the most common mole enemies in the entire series. In some games, Monty Moles appear in {{wp|Whac-A-Mole}}-themed [[minigame]]s. Despite Monty Moles being considered the main member of the  species, their relatives, [[Rocky Wrench]]es from ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' (itself being described as a mole-like turtle at the time), appeared 2 years prior and may have been what Monty Moles might have been initially based on. However, starting in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'', Rocky Wrenches have since been redesigned to more heavily resemble Monty Moles.
